A trademark is a 'source indicator' that lets the general public know where their goods and services come from. In other words, trademarks operate to inform consumers about the origin of the item being purchased, as well as to ensure the quality of that item.

If you're a business, then the answer is yes! All businesses have intellectual property assets in their business name, at a minimum. Protecting your intellectual property proactively is much cheaper than defending unregistered intellectual property retroactively. It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it! 


Whenever your confidential business information, operations, or other business assets are discussed. In some cases, an intellectual property holder may forfeit certain rights by disclosing confidential information to third parties without the protection of a confidentiality agreement or a nondisclosure agreement ("NDA") prior to the disclosure. That being said, you would protect yourself and your business's assets by disclosing confidential information to third parties only after entering into some sort of confidentiality agreement.
